FIELDVALUE function
Read a named field from a linked data value.
Read a named scalar field from a record attached to the source cell in this local practice. The record table is explicit and editable; matching text is not a record. Missing records or fields produce a typed #FIELD! error. Numeric, text and Boolean fields retain their types. Record ranges and field arrays broadcast by matching dimensions or a singleton dimension, within 1,000 output cells. Plain source-label edits suspend stale records. Live Stocks/Geography services, nested entities, dot-field syntax and native linked-data-type serialization/recalculation remain outside the verified scope. Downloads preserve fixed results, field audit rows and literal formula text.
Syntax
FIELDVALUE(value, field_name)Square brackets indicate optional arguments.
Arguments
| Argument | Required | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| value | Yes | A linked or structured cell value containing named fields. |
| field_name | Yes | The exact field label to retrieve from the value. |
Try FIELDVALUE
Do not misclassify an error-looking label
=ISERROR(FIELDVALUE(A2,"Code"))The Code field is stored text, so ISERROR is false even though its characters look like an error.
Records behind these labels
These original records are attached locally to their source cells. Matching text in another cell is not the same record. Changing a label suspends its old fields.

This practice stores scalar local records. It does not connect to Stocks, Geography or another provider, or serialize Excel linked data types. Workbook downloads contain fixed results, a record audit and literal formula text.
Inspect the current formula
Read its written arguments or observe actual operation values in a separate local calculation. This action neither applies a draft nor grades an answer.
Read the formula, one argument at a time
Explore the written function calls and their inputs. The calculation result belongs to the complete formula.
FIELDVALUE · inside ISERROR
=ISERROR(FIELDVALUE(A2,"Code"))Follow the cells behind a result
Read explicit local references and helper formulas using a separate calculation. Your draft stays in this field; the worksheet and practice checks do not change.
The worksheet runs locally. Published checks apply to the supplied example only. Native Excel and Google Sheets compatibility remain unverified.
Reference and compatibility
Original SheetTutor reference notes / Microsoft documentation. Calculation checks cover the supplied examples only. The browser worksheet does not implement every Excel feature, external service or connected data type.
