TRANSLATE function
Translate text using Excel’s connected language service.
This reference covers the native Excel function. Its required application features or connected services are not implemented by the local worksheet engine. Check the linked Microsoft documentation for availability and complete option values.
Syntax
TRANSLATE(text, [source_language], [target_language])Square brackets indicate optional arguments.
Arguments
| Argument | Required | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| text | Yes | Text to examine or process. |
| source_language | No | The source language code; automatic detection depends on the function’s supported options. |
| target_language | No | The destination language code. |
Use browser-local language models
Prepare literal worksheet texts, then calculate TRANSLATE with their current model results. This uses desktop browser language APIs; Excel uses Microsoft Translation Services and may return different results.
Models may download on the first explicit preparation. Text is processed on your device; this page has no translation server or paid API. Opening, recalculating and exporting do not start model calls.
Edit source drafts
Drafts affect the worksheet only after Apply source inputs. A2:A2 holds the applied text rows; B2/C2 hold source/target codes and D2 is this exercise’s explicit fallback target. Up to 12 short texts, 2,000 units each and 8,000 total.
Reference and compatibility
Original SheetTutor reference notes / Microsoft documentation. Calculation checks cover the supplied examples only. The browser worksheet does not implement every Excel feature, external service or connected data type.
