Separate an annual charge, a reporting window and carrying value

Read salvage, fiscal stubs and declining-balance switches before combining financial functions.

Begin with what can be allocated

Cost less salvage is the depreciable base. SLN divides it evenly across useful years; SYD allocates larger weights to earlier years. A charge for year three is different from all charges through year three.

For cost 8,400 and salvage 1,400 over seven years, SLN allocates 1,000 per year. SYD uses a weight sum of 28: year three receives 5/28 of 7,000, or 1,250. The first three SYD charges total 4,500, leaving a carrying value of 3,900.

Keep fiscal and rate assumptions separate

DB derives a fixed rate and rounds that decimal rate to three places. Its first-year months parameter weights the first charge and any extra final fiscal stub. A full first fiscal year has no extra stub.

DDB uses its factor divided by useful life on the opening carrying value, capped at the amount left above salvage. It does not switch automatically. A low factor can leave a balance above salvage at the end; do not silently add an adjustment.

Anchor cumulative values to one timeline

Let C(t) be cumulative VDB allocation from zero through elapsed year t. On a fixed-origin plan, a window is C(end) minus C(start); closing value is cost minus C(end). Adjacent windows then reconcile even if their shared boundary is fractional.

The course uses that cumulative difference for automatic switching. It does not assume a direct fractional-start switching call is equivalent: the pinned engine differs for some such calls. A separate TRUE argument demonstrates the explicitly unswitched interval. Native Excel/Sheets execution still requires its own verification.

Keep computed values distinct from displayed cents

These tasks accept cost and salvage in cents but keep calculated charges unrounded. Formatting a value to two decimal places does not post a rounded charge. A workflow that rounds each accounting entry needs a separate rounding rule and reconciliation.

All examples are original allocation models. Fiscal calendars, tax eligibility, impairment, disposals and changes in estimated useful life are not inferred from a function result.

Check the idea

Cost is 8,400. SYD charges in the first three years are 1,750, 1,500 and 1,250. What is the carrying value after year three?
