Build and explain a PivotTable report
Keep original records, report choices, calculations and chart marks connected.
Start with cell addresses and ordinary formulas. Twelve original exercises connect current report settings, actual editable formula proofs and changed-source checks. Move freely between steps; save only a checked current attempt.

Step 1
Choose the record grain, fields and measure →
Each source row is one observation. Row and column fields partition observations; a summary measures each intersection without changing those original records.
Before this step: Read a six-field source record and a simple table.
Step 2
Rename fields while retaining their source identities →
A display caption names a field in the report. It does not rewrite source headers or item values, change grouping membership or change the selected observations. Row, column and report-filter captions are separate from the Amount value caption.
Before this step: Build a Region-by-Product report and inspect its original source.
Step 3
Keep grand averages weighted by original records →
An Average uses its original numeric observations. The grand Average is not an unweighted average of the displayed group averages; empty intersections have no numeric mean.
Before this step: Build the Region-by-Product Sum report.
Step 4
Filter records before summarizing →
A report Status filter limits which observations enter every intersection and margin. It changes the selected population while retaining the source.
Before this step: Distinguish a displayed report from its complete source.
Step 5
Keep Top items and exact cutoff ties →
Top item filtering scores row items over the selected source before restricting the final report. Exact ties at the cutoff remain, so Top 2 can retain more than two items.
Before this step: Apply a Paid report filter.
Step 6
Explain row shares without changing the raw measure →
A row percentage divides a cell by its own selected row total. Signed credits can produce negative shares or shares above 100%; a zero denominator remains a typed error.
Before this step: Build the unfiltered Region-by-Product Sum report.
Step 7
Combine named items while retaining their records →
A named group replaces several displayed labels with one category. Original records and their signed contributions remain available; the group total is calculated from those records.
Before this step: Use Region rows, Product columns and Sum with no filters.
Step 8
Read details, subtotals and repeated labels →
A two-level report retains leaf results and distinct parent subtotals. Repeated labels affect readability rather than the original grouping or total.
Before this step: Understand Region and Product grouping.
Step 9
Keep chart marks bound to the current Pivot →
The chart reads current Pivot intersections and excludes grand totals from its marks. Editing chart settings and changing the source both require a fresh complete binding check.
Before this step: Distinguish monthly categories from individual records.
Step 10
Clone a report view while sharing its original records →
A copied report starts with the current configuration, then keeps its own fields, filters, captions, number formats and style. Both reports still summarize the same original source records.
Before this step: Build a Region-by-Product Sum report and retain its complete source.
Step 11
Carry a report with all its original data →
The visible Pivot contains selected summaries. A self-contained report file carries its complete original Source table and Pivot cache, including records hidden by the filter. Treat the carried data as part of what you share.
Before this step: Understand report filters and retain the complete original source.
Step 12
Rank by Sum, report Average and explain both →
The filter measure and displayed measure answer different questions. Rank Paid Product items by their Amount Sum, display their original-record Average, and keep all required Values fields in the linked chart.
Before this step: Complete the field, filter, ranking and chart exercises.
Saved records contain unit, version, check/scenario counts and date only. They do not restore worksheet data or certify mastery. Native Excel rendering, recalculation and edit/save require separate checks.
