Toggle Scroll Lock for worksheet navigation

Arrow keys scroll the worksheet instead of moving the active cell, and Scroll Lock is enabled.

Start here: Desktop Excel; keyboard with the required Scroll Lock or F14 capability

Toggling while it is already off turns it on. On Windows, the On-Screen Keyboard provides a ScrLk button; Mac function-key availability varies.

Follow these instructions in your own desktop Excel workbook. This page explains the operation; it does not send commands to Excel.

Mac keys and context

Windows may label the key ScrLk. Microsoft lists Shift+F14 on Mac with a keyboard-dependent qualification; some MacBooks need an external USB keyboard.

Walk through the operation

  1. Check whether Scroll Lock is enabled.
  2. Use the listed combination on a compatible keyboard.
  3. Try an arrow key again to check navigation.

Instruction 1 of 3: Check whether Scroll Lock is enabled.

Expected result: Turning Scroll Lock off restores ordinary arrow-key cell navigation.
