Formulas · original practice scenario

Inspect names in Name Manager

Put 0.08 in B2 and define a workbook-scoped name SalesTaxRate referring to that cell through the Formulas menu. Return focus to the worksheet.

Start here: Desktop Excel worksheet; on Mac this scenario requires Microsoft 365 with Name Manager

Mac version matters: if Define Name opens instead, cancel and use the Formulas menu. Do not treat the older dialog as the same operation.

Follow these instructions in your own desktop Excel workbook. This page explains the operation; it does not send commands to Excel.

Mac keys and context

The publisher distinguishes current Microsoft 365 for Mac from older versions, where Fn+Ctrl+F3 opens Define Name instead. Fn+Cmd+F3 is also listed for current Microsoft 365 for Mac. No earlier Mac version is certified here.

Fn+Ctrl+F3

Also documented: Fn+Cmd+F3.

Publisher-documented binding. Native desktop execution has not been tested.

Walk through the operation

  1. Return to a worksheet cell and leave cell-edit mode.
  2. Use the listed combination to open Name Manager; confirm the dialog identity before proceeding.
  3. Select SalesTaxRate and inspect its scope and Refers To address without editing them.
  4. Close the dialog without changing the name, then use =SalesTaxRate in an empty cell.

Instruction 1 of 4: Return to a worksheet cell and leave cell-edit mode.

Expected result: Name Manager exposes the workbook name and its B2 reference; the test formula returns 0.08. Opening the manager alone changes no cell values.
