Edit a source value, move a rule, then inspect why each cell keeps its format. Calculations stay in this tab.

Check this exercise with changing inputs

Repair the rules using the controls below, then calculate. This check compares every target cell with independent arithmetic and text decisions, including two changed source populations.

Use the current course instructions above. Repair the rules below, calculate and inspect the decision trace, then check this lesson.

Alternative value controls and calculated appearance

1. Set the source and reference cells

Source amounts accept numbers, text or a blank. Prefix an apostrophe to retain numeric-looking text. Due dates accept ISO dates, serial numbers, text or a blank. Labels are literal; entering = does not execute a source formula.

Replace the source using local CSV or TSV text

Use Invoice,Owner,Status,Amount,Due date, with 1–12 records. Date and number text follows the same input rules. Applying replaces the source atomically and resets its applied range. Formula ranges remain as written; update them if your record count changes.

Manage rules for the actual worksheet

The first cell of the applied rectangle is the formula origin. Use $ to lock a row or column. Higher rules win conflicting properties; lower rules may add other properties until a true rule stops them.

Priority 1

Source inputs remain editable. Bar-only changes the computed display and downloads. Numeric cells define the cohort; text and blanks receive no bar. Data bars cannot Stop If True. Preview geometry is a normalized teaching model; exact native rendering is unverified.

Supported formula scope

This workshop supports bounded local A1:H13 references and scalar conditions using AND, OR, NOT, IF, IFERROR, ISNUMBER, ISTEXT, ISBLANK, ISERROR, COUNTIF, COUNTIFS, SUM, MIN, MAX, AVERAGE, MEDIAN, COUNT, COUNTA, PERCENTILE.INC, PERCENTILE.EXC, SUBSTITUTE, MOD, ROW, COLUMN, UPPER, LOWER, LEN, TRIM, ABS, ROUND, SEARCH, FIND, INDEX, EXACT, TRUE and FALSE. Conditions apply for TRUE or a nonzero number. Errors remain visible and do not stop later rules. Array conditions, named ranges, indirect/volatile/external reads are separate work.

Scales accept two or three colors, numeric/percent/percentile thresholds and minimum/maximum endpoints. Percent divides the minimum-to-maximum span; percentile interpolates the sorted numeric values. Out-of-range values clamp to endpoint colors. No numeric cells means no scale format. At equal thresholds the browser uses the earliest stop at equality; native gradient rounding and equal-threshold rendering are not certified.

Icon previews use original teaching artwork. Native downloads use Excel's standard icon families; frozen downloads embed static pictures while retaining source values. In icon-only mode the preview/download hides numbers; the source inputs remain editable. Exact native artwork and client compatibility have not been certified.

Formula thresholds start with =, use absolute references within A1:H13 and must return one finite number. They can read the full source and H2/H3 settings. Relative references, unnamed ROW/COLUMN context, external or volatile reads and multi-cell results are outside this workshop.

Data bars use numeric-only cohorts and normalized preview geometry. Automatic endpoints include zero; lowest/highest use the actual cohort. Axis-free lengths interpolate the two endpoints. With a zero axis, lengths scale within the available positive/negative side; zero has no bar. Equal nonzero endpoints use the maximum length. Context direction is left to right on this sheet. Native x14 rules retain the selected options; older clients receive a legacy fallback. Exact native pixels, mixed-sign length adjustments and client round trips are not certified.
