Build a histogram and a Pareto report

Explain and check the current chart

Predict the number of selected original records, including numeric zero. A chart mark can summarize several records; the two counts are different. Current proofs and source changes are checked separately.

No current lesson check.

Count numeric observations in exact intervals, then order category contributions and find the first cumulative-share crossing. Both charts read the actual worksheet formulas.

Step 1 of 13: Count original numeric observations

Count original numeric observations

A numeric zero is an observation. Unused source cells are blank and do not count.

Follow the highlighted part=COUNT(Source!C2:C31)

Watch in the worksheet: Histogram!G2

Change report controls

There are one to twelve regular intervals plus two open tails. Count gives each original record equal weight. Value shares require nonnegative source values and a positive total.

Edit the original observations

Drafts do not change the source. Applying, adding or deleting one record writes the complete bounded table as one recoverable action.

Pending unapplied drafts: yes.

0 undo action(s), 0 redo action(s).

Edit a workbook-bound chart

Create another chart from a checked report, then edit its actual worksheet ranges, series and axes. Applied changes have their own local Undo/Redo. Source edits need a fresh binding check before export.

Choose columns, bars, lines or areas

Use horizontal bars for category comparisons, especially long labels. All series must use Bars; primary and secondary values read against the bottom and top axes. With the default category direction the first category is at the bottom; reverse categories to place it at the top. Value reversal changes left-to-right direction.

Use lines for change across ordered categories. Ordinary areas fill each series independently from zero (or the positive lower bound on a log axis). They overlap, so their heights are not added and they do not show a stacked total. Signed values keep their direction around the baseline; gaps split the fill, zero fills to zero, and connect spans missing observations. Columns, lines and areas can share one vertical chart.

Changing chart type does not sort, aggregate or repair worksheet data. Compare the exact table and the assigned units before interpreting the marks. Separate axes can make similar shapes represent different amounts; native rendering and edit/save still need their own verification.

Choose differences, ratios and display direction

On a linear axis, 10 → 20 and 20 → 30 cover equal distances: both add 10. On a log axis, 1 → 10 and 10 → 100 cover equal distances: both multiply by 10. Changing the base changes the power tick labels, not relative point positions for the same bounds.

Keep a linear axis for signed contributions, zero counts and comparisons from zero. A log axis cannot place zero or negative observations. Empty cells can stay gaps; plotting them as zero makes a log chart invalid. Log columns, bars and areas start at the positive lower bound, so compare their labeled values rather than treating bar lengths as ratios from zero.

Try the positive Pareto record counts with a log left axis, or use a positive part of Source!C for line values. Apply, compare the exact table and verify current bindings. Choosing log spacing clears a linear major interval and uses powers of the chosen base. Manual log bounds must remain positive.

Reverse categories to reverse their display order; reverse values to reverse the value direction. Neither action sorts the worksheet. Vertical charts keep category labels at the bottom and value labels on their assigned left/right edge. Horizontal bars use left category labels and bottom/top value labels, including in the native file. Secondary axes retain their own units and direction.

Chart draft: none. Current bindings: need checking.

Use one row or one column per local reference, with equal point counts. A linked name overrides its manual name. Hidden rows remain in the explicit range. Blank policy includes empty text in this browser; formula-empty behavior and native edit/save need separate verification.

Check each complete report against its original observations and changed-source calculations. Both current checks are required for download. Formula files retain editable frequency and Pareto chart objects and need modern dynamic-array functions in Excel. Frozen files retain current values and chart data without those functions. Re-export after changing the number of intervals or adding categories. Native automatic binning and statistical-chart dialogs are separate workflows.
