CORE EXCEL · Step 17 of 23
Rebuild readable borders over a solid fill Before this step: Selectively remove fill/borders and recover that change with Undo and Redo.
A solid cell fill can hide ordinary gridlines. Explicit contrasting borders define the report: thin internal lines, a medium outer frame and a double total underline. None of these changes should alter the report calculation.
Reset the original, then repeat the Practice two-layer clear and its Undo/Redo on A1:E5. Apply dark green fill #163D32 and white text to A1:E5 while retaining every other font property and number format. Apply all thin white borders to A1:E5, then a medium white outside frame. Select A5:E5 and apply a double gold #FFD166 bottom border. Retain all source values and formulas, explain explicit borders versus gridlines, predict the original rounded total and check the complete current report. Desktop key: Ctrl+1 · Selected worksheet cells
Open Format Cells and choose Border. Choose the intended edge positions and line settings. Applied borders remain distinct from gridlines, particularly over a fill.
In this worksheet: Use explicit Outside/Inside/Bottom edge controls with the chosen style; inspect actual cells and Undo.
Desktop references use the reviewed US-keyboard context. Function keys can require Fn. Use this lesson’s own platform selector and focus target for captured browser keys. Changing this reference selector does not run a worksheet command.
