CORE EXCEL · Step 16 of 23
Remove decoration without erasing meaning Before this step: Read the actual formula bar and distinguish stored data from its appearance.
No Fill and No Border remove selected layers. Clear Formats also removes number formats and fonts. Neither operation should replace your underlying calculations.
Inspect the current A1:E5 report, including its currency, percentage, header font and italic unit price. Teaching steps locate real cells; reset the original before independent practice. In Practice select A1:E5, enable both fill and border removal and clear those two layers once. Undo and Redo that operation: both layers must recover together. Keep every font, alignment, number format, source and formula; the outside ID and zero must remain intact. Explain the selected layers, predict the original report total and check this lesson. Start here: Select the bounded range and identify which appearance layers to remove.
Use the desktop pointer or menu method below.
Use Home > Borders > No Border to remove the selected cells’ applied borders. Remove fill separately when needed; do not substitute Clear Formats if other formats must remain. No Border removes applied borders; Clear Formats removes additional formats and is a different operation.
In this worksheet: Choose Fill/Borders in the selective layer controls, inspect the complete report and recover the grouped change with Undo.
Desktop references use the reviewed US-keyboard context. Function keys can require Fn. Use this lesson’s own platform selector and focus target for captured browser keys. Changing this reference selector does not run a worksheet command.
