Name cells, ranges and reusable formulas
Calculate with real workbook names, inspect worksheet overrides and reuse named formulas and LAMBDA functions. All inputs stay in this browser.
Resolve workbook names and worksheet overrides
Compare the same Rate name in Report, Rates Audit and a sheet with no local override. Qualified references select the target sheet scope.
Explain the source, then prove the actual formula
Apply or clear pending editor drafts first. This lesson predicts from original source values; the complete current and changed-input workbook check is required separately.
Complete the applied source settings, two explanations and numeric prediction.
Inspect the scopes
One workbook Rate is available everywhere unless a local Rate overrides it. Report and Rates Audit each have their own Rate.
Defined names
Draft reference edits, additions or deletions, then apply them together. Invalid identities leave the applied workbook intact. A name's scope is fixed; create a new name to choose another scope.
Inspect and capture creation anchors
References are written as seen from the creation cell. Dollar signs lock individual rows or columns. Choose a caller to inspect the current A1 expression, then select an actual cell before capturing a different creation anchor. Name scope and creation anchor are separate.
Actual selection: none
Creation anchor: A1 origin; no explicit creation anchor
Expression from Report!E2: ='Source'!$D$2
Stored reference origin
Native relative references are stored at an A1 origin. Last-row/column addresses can encode negative offsets; they do not mean that the resolved caller reads that edge cell.

Formula files retain your current sheets, formulas and scoped names. Frozen copies retain the calculated values and a readable list of definitions. Renaming preserves quoted text and local LET/LAMBDA variables; a spelling that changes a reference is refused. Captured creation anchors retain relative and mixed A1 references. Quoted names inside INDIRECT do not follow a rename automatically. Recursive names and files from other workbooks remain outside this practice.
Names refer to this local workbook. Worksheet-local names take precedence in that worksheet; qualify another sheet explicitly to use its local name. This exercise does not import external workbooks or complete a guided task. Native Excel and Google Sheets recalculation remain separate checks.
