ASC function
Changes full-width (double-byte) English letters or katakana within a character string to half-width (single-byte) characters
The Japanese-width conversion in this worksheet includes Latin letters, digits, spaces, kana punctuation and voiced/half-voiced katakana. It retains unrelated Unicode compatibility characters. Native Excel conversion depends on language settings; native locale compatibility remains unverified.

Normalize full-width Latin and voiced katakana
=ASC(A2)ASC converts full-width Latin letters, digits and spaces to half-width forms. In the Japanese conversion used here, ガラス becomes ガラス; the voiced ガ becomes a half-width base plus a voicing mark. It does not translate or change letter case. Native Excel behavior depends on language settings.
