CHITEST function

Returns the test for independence. CHITEST returns the value from the chi-squared (χ2) distribution for the statistic and the appropriate degrees of freedom. You can use χ2 tests to determine whether hypothesized results are verified by an experiment.

Syntax

CHITEST(actual_range, expected_range)

Square brackets indicate optional arguments.

Arguments

ArgumentRequiredMeaning
actual_rangeYesRequired. The range of data that contains observations to test against expected values.A1:A4
expected_rangeYesRequired. The range of data that contains the ratio of the product of row totals and column totals to the grand total.B1:B4

Try CHITEST

Read the legacy CHITEST function name

=CHITEST(A2:B3,D2:E3)

CHITEST is the compatibility name corresponding to CHISQ.TEST. The four contributions total (4+4+4+4)/10=1.6. With (2-1)*(2-1)=1 degree of freedom, the right-tail probability is about 0.205903211. This is a test p-value under the stated count model, not the probability that a hypothesis is true. Use the modern name when creating a new formula; the old spelling is useful when reading existing workbooks.
