CONFIDENCE function

Returns the confidence interval for a population mean, using a normal distribution.

Syntax

CONFIDENCE(alpha, standard_dev, size)

Square brackets indicate optional arguments.

Arguments

ArgumentRequiredMeaning
alphaYesRequired. The significance level used to compute the confidence level. The confidence level equals 100*(1 - alpha)%, or in other words, an alpha of 0.05 indicates a 95 percent confidence level.0.05
standard_devYesRequired. The population standard deviation for the data range and is assumed to be known.2.5
sizeYesRequired. The sample size.50

Try CONFIDENCE

Read the legacy CONFIDENCE function name

=CONFIDENCE(A2,B2,C2)

CONFIDENCE is the compatibility name corresponding to CONFIDENCE.NORM. This returns the margin of error, not a lower or upper limit: z(0.975)*2/SQRT(100), about 0.392. A confidence interval for a mean also needs the sample mean and appropriate sampling assumptions. Use the modern name when creating a new formula; the old spelling is useful when reading existing workbooks.
