FILTER function
The FILTER function allows you to filter a range of data based on criteria you define.
Syntax
FILTER(array, include, [if_empty])Square brackets indicate optional arguments.
Arguments
| Argument | Required | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| array | Yes | The range or array to filter.A5:D20 |
| include | Yes | An array of Boolean values where TRUE indicates that a row or column is to be retained.(C5:C20="Apple")*(A5:A20="East") |
| if_empty | No | If no items are reserved, return."" |
Try FILTER
Understand an empty-filter calculation error and choose a fallback
=FILTER(A2:B3,B2:B3>C2)Neither quantity is greater than 100, so no rows match. With the optional if_empty argument omitted, FILTER returns a real #CALC! error because Excel cannot return an empty array. Add a third argument such as "No matches" when an empty result is an expected outcome. This differs from replacing every kind of error with IFERROR. FILTER requires an Excel version with dynamic-array support.
Inspect the current formula
Read its written arguments or observe actual operation values in a separate local calculation. This action neither applies a draft nor grades an answer.
Read the formula, one argument at a time
Explore the written function calls and their inputs. The calculation result belongs to the complete formula.
FILTER · top-level call
=FILTER(A2:B3,B2:B3>C2)Follow the cells behind a result
Read explicit local references and helper formulas using a separate calculation. Your draft stays in this field; the worksheet and practice checks do not change.
The worksheet runs locally. Published checks apply to the supplied example only. Native Excel and Google Sheets compatibility remain unverified.
