PHONETIC function

Extracts the phonetic (furigana) characters from a text string

Read stored furigana from an annotated text cell. This worksheet keeps original runs attached to their own source cells; it does not generate readings or borrow them from another matching label. A contiguous reference uses its upper-left cell, and a nonadjacent union returns #N/A. Changing the source text suspends mismatching annotations; computed text has no inherited reading. Local practice supports text and explicit UTF-16 spans. Numeric/Boolean coercion, input-method annotation creation, native regional settings and Excel/Sheets edit/save/recalculation remain unverified.

Syntax

PHONETIC(Reference)

Square brackets indicate optional arguments.

Arguments

ArgumentRequiredMeaning
ReferenceYesRequired. Text string or a reference to a single cell or a range of cells that contain a furigana text string.A2

Try PHONETIC

Reject a nonadjacent reference union

=PHONETIC((A2,A3))

A nonadjacent reference union produces a typed #N/A error. A contiguous rectangle has a different rule.

Stored source readings

These readings were supplied with the example. PHONETIC reads them; it does not guess a pronunciation. A source edit suspends a reading whose base text no longer matches.

Span positions are zero-based UTF-16 offsets; the end is excluded. Supplementary characters stay intact. Native regional and compatibility-version behavior remains unverified.
