Syntax
VDB(cost, salvage, life, start_period, end_period, [factor], [no_switch])Square brackets indicate optional arguments.
Arguments
| Argument | Required | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| cost | Yes | The initial cost of the asset.2400 |
| salvage | Yes | The value at the end of the depreciation (sometimes called the salvage value of the asset).300 |
| life | Yes | The number of periods over which the asset is being depreciated (sometimes called the useful life of the asset).10 |
| start_period | Yes | The starting period for which you want to calculate the depreciation.1 |
| end_period | Yes | The ending period for which you want to calculate the depreciation.2 |
| factor | No | The rate at which the balance declines. If factor is omitted, it is assumed to be 2 (the double-declining balance method).2 |
| no_switch | No | A logical value specifying whether to switch to straight-line depreciation when depreciation is greater than the declining balance calculation.false |
Try VDB
Combine two declining-balance periods
=VDB(A2,B2,C2,0,2)From period 0 to 2, the first two depreciation charges are 400 and 240. Their sum is 640. VDB can also handle partial periods and a switch to straight-line depreciation.
