Open Help for a focused Ribbon control

In a spare workbook, give the Home Ribbon keyboard focus and use Tab to focus a formatting control without activating it.

Start here: Windows desktop Excel with a Ribbon control holding keyboard focus

This is contextual Help, not a tooltip. Function-key and network behavior can vary; no Mac equivalent is listed in the reviewed source.

Follow these instructions in your own desktop Excel workbook. This page explains the operation; it does not send commands to Excel.

Mac keys and context

This catalog has no verified Mac binding for this operation. The steps below describe Windows. Choose Windows to use the walkthrough and recall controls.

Walk through the operation

  1. Confirm focus is on the intended control rather than in a cell editor.
  2. Press the listed key and inspect the Help surface that opens.
  3. Check the Help topic against the focused control, then close Help and return to the workbook.

Expected result: Help is requested for the selected control without executing its formatting command.
