NEGBINOMDIST function

Returns the negative binomial distribution. NEGBINOMDIST returns the probability that there will be number_f failures before the number_s-th success, when the constant probability of a success is probability_s. This function is similar to the binomial distribution, except that the number of successes is fixed, and the number of trials is variable. Like the binomial, trials are assumed to be independent.

Syntax

NEGBINOMDIST(number_f, number_s, probability_s)

Square brackets indicate optional arguments.

Arguments

ArgumentRequiredMeaning
number_fYesRequired. The number of failures.10
number_sYesRequired. The threshold number of successes.5
probability_sYesRequired. The probability of a success.0.25

Try NEGBINOMDIST

Read the legacy NEGBINOMDIST function name

=NEGBINOMDIST(A2,B2,C2)

NEGBINOMDIST is the compatibility name corresponding to NEGBINOM.DIST. For the third success to occur after exactly two failures, the final trial is a success. The first four trials contain two successes in 6 orders, each five-trial sequence having probability 1/32. Use the modern name when creating a new formula; the old spelling is useful when reading existing workbooks.
