Syntax

TODAY()

Arguments

ArgumentRequiredMeaning

This function takes no arguments.

Try TODAY

Read the current local date as an Excel serial

=TODAY()

TODAY returns the local calendar date as a whole-number Excel serial. It updates when the worksheet recalculates. The result remains numeric so you can subtract another date; a date number format changes how it is displayed. This example checks the local date during the calculation, so midnight changes do not require editing a published answer.

Checks for this calculation:

  • G2: The current local date as a whole-number Excel serial.

Output: 1 rows × 1 columns. Keep TODAY in the formula for this exercise. The check applies to this calculation's output.

Reference workbook results appear after recalculation in a compatible spreadsheet app. Current-data downloads refresh the results shown here. Keep formulas to recalculate later, or select Freeze results to save fixed values.

Inspect the current formula

Read its written arguments or observe actual operation values in a separate local calculation. This action neither applies a draft nor grades an answer.
