LET function
Assigns names to calculation results
Syntax
LET(name1, name_value1, calculation_or_name2, [name_value2], [calculation_or_name3])Square brackets indicate optional arguments.
Arguments
| Argument | Required | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| name1 | Yes | The first name to assign. Must start with a letter. Cannot be the output of a formula or conflict with range syntax.x |
| name_value1 | Yes | The value that is assigned to name1.5 |
| calculation_or_name2 | Yes | One of the following:
1.A calculation that uses all names within the LET function. This must be the last argument in the LET function.
2.A second name to assign to a second name_value. If a name is specified, name_value2 and calculation_or_name3 become required.y |
| name_value2 | No · repeats | The value that is assigned to calculation_or_name2.6 |
| calculation_or_name3 | No · repeats | One of the following:
1.A calculation that uses all names within the LET function. The last argument in the LET function must be a calculation.
2.A third name to assign to a third name_value. If a name is specified, name_value3 and calculation_or_name4 become required.SUM(x,y) |
Try LET
Call a local LAMBDA by its assigned name
=LET(scale,3,times,LAMBDA(value,value*scale),times(A2))The local times function captures scale=3 and receives 7, giving 21. A local function name is not a missing Excel built-in. Change scale or the input to reuse the same body.
Inspect the current formula
Read its written arguments or observe actual operation values in a separate local calculation. This action neither applies a draft nor grades an answer.
Read the formula, one argument at a time
Explore the written function calls and their inputs. The calculation result belongs to the complete formula.
LET · top-level call
=LET(scale,3,times,LAMBDA(value,value*scale),times(A2))1 / 5 · name 1
Declare a local name for the following value. This name is not a worksheet cell reference.
LET reference ↗Follow the cells behind a result
Read explicit local references and helper formulas using a separate calculation. Your draft stays in this field; the worksheet and practice checks do not change.
